Come learn the compelling story of Rita’s Quilt.

When craftivist Shannon Downey stumbled upon an unfinished quilt at an estate sale in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, she knew she had to finish it in honor of the original artist who had passed on. She also knew that she could not do it alone. Hear the story of what happened when 150 artists from across the country worked together to finish #RitasQuilt.

Rita’s Quilt is a work of love. Rita planned the quilt painstakingly, and Shannon was able to complete her design. The quilt consists of a beautifully embroidered map, fifty stars, and fifty states’ birds and flowers. Don’t miss your chance to see this incredible work of art and to learn the full story!

Shannon will be at the Neill-Cochran House Museum to share this incredible story. We will set up out on our spacious front lawn. The in-person crowd will be kept small to ensure we can socially distance all chairs for everyone’s safety. Still Austin will also be onsite helping to keep everyone warm with their delicious Bourbon! We also request that all guests, speakers, and staff remain masked to ensure everyone’s safety, except when in their seats enjoying their drinks!

We will also be presenting this spectacular event virtually the day of the talk! Register for the special zoom meeting to learn more about Rita’s Quilt.

Shannon Downey better known as Badass Cross Stitch, is a community organizer disguised as a fiber artist and craftivist. She blends her politics, activism, and art into projects that are designed to inspire others to take action, think, discuss, engage with democracy and their community, and find some digital/analog balance. She currently lives in her RV full-time and is traversing the country bringing community and art activism to the country she still believes in.

She is the instigator behind #RitasQuilt and @BadassHerstory and is on a quest to teach 1 million people to embroider and invite society to rethink how we categorize and value craft and art.

Her life motto is: Make Art. Smash Systems.
