The Neill-Cochran House Museum is excited to announce its participation in 2023 Texas Poet Laureate Cyrus Cassells’ poetry contest, “What Juneteenth Means (to Me)”. Come celebrate the grade 8-12 winners and hear them read their deeply moving poems.
Earlier this year, entries were submitted by Texas students in grades 8 through 12. Ten winners were chosen (3 prize winners and 7 honorable mentions). The winners are invited with their families to join us at the Neill-Cochran House Museum on May 20, 2023, for a special ceremony and reception.

This special contest and awards ceremony is made possible through a Laureate Fellowship from the Academy of American Poets. The organization has a long history of championing the role of poets laureate, and in 2019 they expanded their work to include prizes and fellowships for poets. The Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowships are $50,000 awards given to honor poets of literary merit appointed to serve in civic positions and to enable them to undertake meaningful, impactful, and innovative projects that engage their fellow residents, including youth, with poetry, helping to address issues important to their communities, as well as create new work. Cyrus Cassells is one of 22 poets laureates in the 2021 class.
