What Kind of Collages?
This collage workshop introduces a unique way of doing collages. Unlike the traditional way of making collages, this way is not about putting together pretty pictures. It is about learning to see in a “slow” way. It is about letting the collage tell you what it wants. It is a meditative way of creating visual beauty. It involves “listening” to what the art is saying to you. In this type of collage, you wind up with a sort of visual haiku poem, a peaceful, visual mantra, a quiet, mindful moment, a contemplation of something deep inside you. This will not be like drinking some Kool-Aid, it will be like drinking the water from a deeper well.
What Collage Pieces Should You Bring?
Do not bring any pictures taken from magazines. Instead, bring small, flat bits of junk, a little rubbish, throw-away items. Pick up tiny things from the sidewalks, from the street. Dig out some little stuff from your desk drawer, from the bottom of your school satchel. Tear out pieces of old letters and notes. Steal labels off of some bottle. If you open your eyes to the small “trash” around you, little things will speak to you and tell you to obtain them. Open your eyes and let the colors and textures and shapes of discarded items move you. Bring all that kind of weird stuff to the class. We will make lemonade out of those lemons.
