The Floating World:
Tokyo to Texas
Contemporary Woodblock Prints in Conversation with Antique Ukiyo-e Prints from the Artist’s Collection
-Daryl Howard-
on display at the Neill-Cochran House mUseum
June 4, 2025 - September 7, 2025
The Neill-Cochran House Museum is honored to present The Floating World: Tokyo to Texas. This exhibition features work by Central Texas artist Daryl Howard displayed with antique Ukiyo-e woodblock prints from Howard’s own collection. The exhibition pulls back the curtain on Howard’s creative process by directly pairing pieces of her own with the masterworks that inspired her passion for Japanese art and culture. In addition to displaying Howard’s original and collected works, the Neill-Cochran House Museum will present a series of events to engage the Austin community with Japanese arts and culture in the summer of 2025.
The Neill-Cochran House Museum is seeking sponsorships to help bring The Floating World: Tokyo to Texas to its Central Texas audiences. The exhibition, an opening reception, a talk with the artist, and workshops for both adults and families will highlight corners of Japanese culture in Texas, provide the context and history of Japanese culture, and allow visitors to have hands-on experiences with the art form itself.
At dawn’s first light at evening’s final glow I will never leave you I & II (2023)

About the artist
After receiving her BFA from Sam Houston State University, Daryl lived and taught art at a school in Tokyo in the 1970’s. During this time Howard was introduced to a private collection of 18th and 19th century Ukiyo-e woodcuts. Feeling an immediate connection to the works of art and wanting to learn more about the woodblock printmaking process, Daryl embarked on an apprenticeship with Master Printmaker Hodaka Yoshida.
By the time she left Japan, Howard had become proficient in the medium, well on her way to perfecting the painstaking demands of carving and printing. Immediately returning to graduate school in 1976 at the University of Texas at Austin, she began her experience with a second medium, mixed media collage.
